A group of businesspeople has formed Go Green Wichita, an organization that the group said will promote environmental awareness and work toward energy and natural resources conservation and recycling.
The organization will be formed as a nonprofit and expects to begin recruiting member companies in the fall.
Dixie Larson, who along with Candace Wilson is organizing the group, said more plans and details of the group's mission will be formalized at a meeting June 22.
Organizing members of the group include representatives from Kennedy and Coe, Fahnestock Plumbing HVAC and Electric, Syndeo Outsourcing, Associated, Via Christi Health System, ServiceMaster, Waste Connections, Cargill Meat Solutions, Kansas Leadership Center, Westar Energy, UMB Bank, Young Professionals of Wichita and Sedgwick County.
"This organization could allow us to bring awareness to those that may need it and serve as a conduit to the community, by giving examples of best practices and sharing good ideas," George Fahnestock, CEO of Fahnestock Plumbing HVAC and Electric, said in a news release.
Larson, a principal at Kennedy and Coe, said the idea for the group came during a conversation between her and Wilson, marketing coordinator at the firm, a month ago.
"And we started making phone calls," Larson said. "Of the roughly 40 businesses we talked to there wasn't one that wasn't excited about it."
Larson said the group will eventually have a Web site and develop educational marketing pieces to distribute to companies.
Membership fees will pay for the cost of supporting the group's activities, she said.
